I had been wanting to capture Adam for years. Adam heads up our local division of Sea Shepherd. The stories of the seas etched in his face, his furrow and lines show a life of adventure and exploration. He reminds me of a 'captain of the sea', self assured, passionate and extremely outspoken. When Adam started with Sea Shepard he tells us, he was very shy. I smile as this seems so far from the man who stands before me. I tell Adam that I wouldn’t wish to be on his bad side, he instantly agrees. This is what is needed when you are on the forefront, fighting to save our world. You need conviction, crossed with a frustration and a drive to make a difference. When you see what needs be done in the world, it can be frustrating when you come up against the ignorance of others. It takes a strong soul to keep putting out the message, knowing that one day the others will wake up.
Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Their mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.
Adam explained that "the awareness of whats happening in the oceans has increased, we have been doing this market for the past 8 years. I have noticed an amazing change unfold over those 8 years, most kids come up to the whale poster and are now able to identify all of the whales." "Awareness is increasing!" "Yesterday Iceland announced they would stop whaling, our volunteers sank two of their ships in 1966, it took them out of business for 16 years. Due to the awareness we have brought, the Japanese public is no longer eating whale meat. The whale meat was collecting in their warehouses, it become an economic nightmare. This is a great victory. The last poaching ship vessel in Southern ocean Antartica has finally been caught, that campaign has been finished." Adam went on to say, "many people are drawn to Sea shepherd because of the "cute whales and creatures. Sea shepherd is so much more. It is about saving our oceans, without our oceans we are without a planet. "If the whales are the beacon for people to save the planet, then great."
Adams conservation work started at Terranium creek in 1979. Known as the ‘big scrub’ originally, this massive forest dwindled down to this tiny forest, all of the hippies got together and stopped it. This is one my most favourite things about this community, people are so connected to the land and themselves, they innately know right from wrong. Rather than be told to conform, sit down and say nothing. Go back to work, consume, watch, die! These amazing custodians band together, step up and do the work for all of us.
Adam finishes by saying, "We are thinking of opening opening a Land, Sea shepherd, 'Land Shepherd'." Who knows, I would not be surprised, this organisation is a powerful force around the world. Volunteers from all over, risk their lives to save ours. The ultimate act of service.
Usually we ask our souls, how they want to be listed in the book. Adam did not want to be known as Adam, His words, "This is not about Adam. This is about Sea shepherd. This is all about saving our planet! Aho dear soul!
