"You've got to grab the moment, close the door!" one of the girls shouts. And that we did. Trying to grab a moment, shutting a shop this popular proved challenging. The doors were closed for maybe 2 minutes and there was already a queue of people out the front. (Knocking on the door, might I add.) As you know, I like taking my time, especially when it comes to group shots (not my forte). That said, I am learning to just go with it, its going to be perfect even in the imperfection. My critical eye learning to ease up and surrender to this crazy, fun adventure. The photographs always have their own identity and usually reflect the subject matter and adventure had.
From Humble beginnings, Mullum Herbals began in 1994, out of a little store room out the back of Poinciana cafe. Fast forward, 20 years and its now a thriving organic dispensary in the middle of town. An icon in the shire, people come from all around to visit. It is the 'go to' place for almost anything.
“ There’s three of us who own it, (Val, Jacinta and Elvian) when we started we had a mission of providing alternative healthcare for the community and we had a big thing about providing employment. Also, the fact that we were single mums, booking an appointment for everything you need is really hard, so we wanted a place where mothers could come and get professional advice and not have to pay for the consult every time, yet know they are getting looked after well.
It’s a very intimate environment, bottom line, things will come up, because we are in a small space working together, but we work it out. In fact, when Val, Jacinta and I started this place over 20 years ago, we sat in the middle and made a vow to put our personal growth and spirituality before everything.”
"We are proud and feel like we provide a great community service.” And that they have. It is a social hub, you can’t walk in without knowing someone. I love the smells, the potions, if I’m ever having an off day, I will pop in and get an oil, a herb or some other delight. Over the past few years, I have been known on more than a couple of occasions to pop in for some 'Ignatia'. Lesley, in the most loving way, scolds me and tells me that I can't keep on relying on these homeopathic remedies. I giggle, as I think that homeopathics are not the worse vice to have.
The respect that these souls have for the local community is impressive. I found Elvian's perspective and words moving.“Our shire sometimes gets a bad wrap for being hippies. Conversing on a daily basis with this community I get to see some of the most forward thinking and intelligent people. They have ample awareness of health, art and lifestyle.” Yes! Elvian's words and perspective, spot on! This community is progressive and the level of awareness unlike any I have seen. "Do you have any funny customer stories I ask?" No we have strict confidentiality! I had to ask, I wanted some little story to add for the pleasure of our readers. This more evidence of the integrity and respect these dear ones hold.
"There have been changes over the years, our clients used to be lower income people, that has changed and is continuing to change as more people are moving here from the cities." Jacinta tells us that people are becoming more aware and educated and are choosing natural healing methods. "Doctors are now referring patients." I smile as I love this collaboration. I am already acutely aware that some of our doctors around town are pretty forward thinking and seeking out alternative ways of healing. How I love this town! It is no longer just people coming with the common cold or cough, Mullum herbals are treating it all. "We are passionate about supporting and empowering people to support there own health. To get the individual to see where they are out of balance."
As in any great relationship, it goes both ways. Mullum herbals has a great respect and reverence for our community, and our community has great trust and respect for Mullum herbals. Its a partnership we hold each other. Bless x
